Pluto ASC line
Intensity and will. The Pluto ASC line (Ascendant, often written AC) runs through the places where Pluto was rising on the eastern horizon when you were born.

What the Pluto ASC line means
Pluto rising concentrates you. More willpower, more magnetism, more need to control, and others sense the intensity before you speak. It favours deep personal work and major life overhauls. Obsession and power struggles are the shadow; the place does not do things by halves.
If your Pluto ASC line runs through your birthplace, you already know it: Pluto was rising when you were born, and the intensity people meet in you is the one the line describes. For everyone else it arrives as a change of manner. You get quieter, more watchful and harder to fool. People take you seriously, sometimes warily, and it takes them longer to feel they know you.
People go to their Pluto rising line to finish with a version of themselves: after years of being agreeable to everyone, or when a role they've outgrown still fits them in other people's eyes. The change goes deep and tends to stay done. Control is what needs watching. The will that's so useful for remaking yourself can start reaching for other people and situations too, so give it one large project of your own.
Where it runs
The Pluto ASC line is a curve, not a straight line. It crosses the equator 90° of longitude west of your Pluto MC line. Away from the equator it swings towards the IC line in the hemisphere Pluto was on that day (north or south of the celestial equator) and towards the MC line in the other, and it ends where it meets them. Everywhere on it, Pluto was rising when you were born.
Pluto's declination, how far north or south of the celestial equator it sits, decides where its rising and setting lines stop: at 90° of latitude minus the declination. For births between 1930 and 2025 it ran from 23.5° S to 24.1° N, so in some charts those lines end as close to the equator as about 66° of latitude, north or south. Beyond that point Pluto didn't rise or set at all on the day you were born, while the MC and IC lines carry on to the poles.
Distance and birth time
A line is a band, not a wall. Zenith Map's scores count a line in full on it, about 60% at 250 km, about 14% at 500 km and not at all beyond 1,000 km. Astrocartographers draw the edge in different places; the methodology page gives the reasoning for this one.
Every line in a chart moves west by a quarter of a degree of longitude for each minute later the birth: about 28 km at the equator and 14 km at 60° latitude. A time rounded to the nearest quarter hour can put your Pluto ASC line up to about 200 km from where it's drawn, which is why the map draws bands when you say the time is approximate.
Questions
What does living on the Pluto ASC line feel like?
Concentrated, in the usual reading. With Pluto rising your will hardens, you keep more to yourself, and others notice your presence before you've said much. It favours deep personal change. The difficulty is control: of yourself, of situations and of other people.
Is the Pluto ASC line good for reinvention?
It and the Uranus ASC are the two lines astrologers name first for it. Uranus rising makes a quick break with old roles; Pluto rising works slower and more thoroughly, down to the root. Choose it when you're prepared to let an old version of yourself go for good.
How is the Pluto ASC line different from the Pluto MC line?
Both put Pluto on a major angle; the difference is where the intensity goes. The Pluto ASC makes it personal: your will, your presence, the changes you make in yourself. The Pluto MC makes it public: power, rivalry and scrutiny at work. Choose by which part of life you want Pluto working on.
