Moon ASC line

Sensitivity on the surface. The Moon ASC line (Ascendant, often written AC) runs through the places where Moon was rising on the eastern horizon when you were born.

What the Moon ASC line means

With the Moon rising, feelings sit close to the skin. You read rooms quickly, respond to people warmly and are responded to in kind, and your body registers the place: sleep, appetite and mood all shift. It is a nourishing line for anyone who needs to soften, and a tiring one if your boundaries are already thin.

On the Moon rising line you become easier to talk to. Strangers tell you things in queues, children and dogs take to you, and you find yourself looking after people you met last week. Other people answer that softer, more receptive manner by bringing you their feelings along with their company.

You take on the mood of wherever you are, so the town itself matters more than usual. A quiet harbour town and a loud capital on the same Moon ASC line can feel like two different lines, and the one with the slower pace is usually the easier to live in.

It's at its best for a year off: after a break-up, after a job that took everything, after years of being the strong one. It asks more of anyone whose work needs a thick skin, such as sales targets or litigation, unless a Mars or Saturn line close by lends some armour.

Where it runs

The Moon ASC line is a curve, not a straight line. It crosses the equator 90° of longitude west of your Moon MC line. Away from the equator it swings towards the IC line in the hemisphere Moon was on that day (north or south of the celestial equator) and towards the MC line in the other, and it ends where it meets them. Everywhere on it, Moon was rising when you were born.

Moon's declination, how far north or south of the celestial equator it sits, decides where its rising and setting lines stop: at 90° of latitude minus the declination. For births between 1930 and 2025 it ran from 28.7° S to 28.7° N, so in some charts those lines end as close to the equator as about 61° of latitude, north or south. Beyond that point Moon didn't rise or set at all on the day you were born, while the MC and IC lines carry on to the poles.

Distance and birth time

A line is a band, not a wall. Zenith Map's scores count a line in full on it, about 60% at 250 km, about 14% at 500 km and not at all beyond 1,000 km. Astrocartographers draw the edge in different places; the methodology page gives the reasoning for this one.

Every line in a chart moves west by a quarter of a degree of longitude for each minute later the birth: about 28 km at the equator and 14 km at 60° latitude. A time rounded to the nearest quarter hour can put your Moon ASC line up to about 200 km from where it's drawn, which is why the map draws bands when you say the time is approximate.

Questions

Should you live on your Moon ASC line?

For a gentler, more settled life it often works. In the textbook view Moon rising makes you warmer, more open and more aware of your own moods. It's harder going if you already soak up other people's feelings, since the line makes you more receptive still, so pick a calm town on it over a hectic one.

What's the difference between the Moon ASC and Moon IC lines?

Both are gentle lines, aimed at different things. On the Moon ASC it's your manner and moods that soften and open up, along with how readily you meet people. On the Moon IC it's your home, your family and your roots that take hold. The Ascendant is the one you notice in the first week; the IC is the one that keeps people for years.
