Mars ASC line
Courage and impatience. The Mars ASC line (Ascendant, often written AC) runs through the places where Mars was rising on the eastern horizon when you were born.

What the Mars ASC line means
Mars rising makes you bolder, fitter and quicker to act, and others experience you as forceful. It is a strong line for training, taking initiative and recovering vitality. Accidents, tempers and burnout are the shadow; the body wants to move here, and the mouth wants to speak first.
Mars on the Ascendant changes you before it changes anything around you. You walk faster, say the thing you'd usually swallow and sign up for the race. People who've spent years being the accommodating one often like who they turn into here. The relocated chart puts Mars in the first house, the house of the body, so the line shows most plainly in physical life: training, outdoor work, a sport you let lapse.
The other side is how you land on people. The directness that feels like relief to you can read as rudeness to a new colleague or a neighbour, and on this line the reaction can arrive before you've noticed the tone. That makes it a better place for a training camp, an expedition or a few months of getting your edge back than for a job that runs on diplomacy.
Where it runs
The Mars ASC line is a curve, not a straight line. It crosses the equator 90° of longitude west of your Mars MC line. Away from the equator it swings towards the IC line in the hemisphere Mars was on that day (north or south of the celestial equator) and towards the MC line in the other, and it ends where it meets them. Everywhere on it, Mars was rising when you were born.
Mars's declination, how far north or south of the celestial equator it sits, decides where its rising and setting lines stop: at 90° of latitude minus the declination. For births between 1930 and 2025 it ran from 28.7° S to 27.2° N, so in some charts those lines end as close to the equator as about 61° of latitude, north or south. Beyond that point Mars didn't rise or set at all on the day you were born, while the MC and IC lines carry on to the poles.
Distance and birth time
A line is a band, not a wall. Zenith Map's scores count a line in full on it, about 60% at 250 km, about 14% at 500 km and not at all beyond 1,000 km. Astrocartographers draw the edge in different places; the methodology page gives the reasoning for this one.
Every line in a chart moves west by a quarter of a degree of longitude for each minute later the birth: about 28 km at the equator and 14 km at 60° latitude. A time rounded to the nearest quarter hour can put your Mars ASC line up to about 200 km from where it's drawn, which is why the map draws bands when you say the time is approximate.
Questions
Is the Mars ASC line dangerous?
No line is dangerous in itself. Mars rising is read as more physical energy, more nerve and less patience, so you act faster and react faster. The traditional caution is about haste and temper, which is why astrocartographers advise giving the energy an outlet and slowing down where hurrying costs you.
Is the Mars ASC line good for sport?
Training and competition are where Mars rising is read at its best: more drive, more appetite for hard sessions and a stronger will to win. It's an impatient line too, so it fits a block of training with a plan better than open-ended rest.
Mars ASC or Mars MC line: which is better?
Neither wins outright; that depends where you want the drive to go. On the Ascendant, Mars works on you: your body, your nerve, the way you come across face to face. On the Midheaven it works on your career and public name, with more competition and friction at work. For a personal reset or a training year, the ASC; for a career push, the MC.
Is it bad to live on your Mars line?
Not as a rule. Mars lines are active and demanding, which some people want, and a line fades with distance rather than stopping at an edge: in Zenith Map's scoring it weighs in full where it runs, about 60% at 250 km away, about 14% at 500 km and nothing past 1,000 km. Check Mars at birth, and what else crosses the place, before deciding anything.
