Jupiter ASC line
Confidence and growth. The Jupiter ASC line (Ascendant, often written AC) runs through the places where Jupiter was rising on the eastern horizon when you were born.

What the Jupiter ASC line means
Jupiter rising enlarges you: more optimism, more generosity, more appetite, and a reputation for being lucky and open-handed. People meet you as someone worth helping. It is a fine line for learning, travel and personal growth. Weight, indulgence and overconfidence are the costs of all that ease.
Holidays on Jupiter rising have a way of sending people home looking well and talking a lot. You say yes to the invitation, sign up for the course and chat to strangers on the train. The line's name for luck has a plain explanation: people who look relaxed and generous get offered more, and much of what gets called luck here is other people deciding to back you.
Use it for a sabbatical, a language course, a year of study abroad, or the first months somewhere new after a stretch that made you smaller.
Overconfidence is the quieter cost. On Jupiter rising you believe your own optimism more than usual, so a plan made here deserves a second reading from someone who lives elsewhere before you sign anything. Jupiter in a fire sign or tied to Mars at birth is read as turning this up; Jupiter in Capricorn or square Saturn as keeping it in check.
Where it runs
The Jupiter ASC line is a curve, not a straight line. It crosses the equator 90° of longitude west of your Jupiter MC line. Away from the equator it swings towards the IC line in the hemisphere Jupiter was on that day (north or south of the celestial equator) and towards the MC line in the other, and it ends where it meets them. Everywhere on it, Jupiter was rising when you were born.
Jupiter's declination, how far north or south of the celestial equator it sits, decides where its rising and setting lines stop: at 90° of latitude minus the declination. For births between 1930 and 2025 it ran from 23.5° S to 23.5° N, so in some charts those lines end as close to the equator as about 67° of latitude, north or south. Beyond that point Jupiter didn't rise or set at all on the day you were born, while the MC and IC lines carry on to the poles.
Distance and birth time
A line is a band, not a wall. Zenith Map's scores count a line in full on it, about 60% at 250 km, about 14% at 500 km and not at all beyond 1,000 km. Astrocartographers draw the edge in different places; the methodology page gives the reasoning for this one.
Every line in a chart moves west by a quarter of a degree of longitude for each minute later the birth: about 28 km at the equator and 14 km at 60° latitude. A time rounded to the nearest quarter hour can put your Jupiter ASC line up to about 200 km from where it's drawn, which is why the map draws bands when you say the time is approximate.
Questions
Is the Jupiter ASC line lucky?
It has that reputation. Astrocartography reads Jupiter rising as optimism, generosity and an easy manner that makes other people want to help you, which from outside often looks like luck. It promises no outcome, and its costs are overconfidence and overindulgence.
Is the Jupiter ASC line good for studying abroad?
Few lines fit it better. Traditional astrology gives Jupiter higher learning and foreign travel, and the Ascendant puts those themes into your daily life, so the line suits a year abroad, a degree or a long course. It's also easy, on this line, to enjoy the place more than the coursework.
