What the Jupiter DSC line means
Jupiter setting brings partners, mentors and allies who open doors. Relationships here tend to be expansive, encouraging and often connected to other cultures or to teaching. Marriages and business partnerships formed on this line often bring growth to both sides. Be alert to promises made in good faith and larger than life.
Of the four Jupiter lines, the Descendant is the one that works through other people, which makes it the better pick for someone who works alone. The person across the table tends to be generous with time, introductions and good faith: a teacher, a sponsor, an older colleague who decides you're worth the trouble, a partner who thinks bigger than you do.
As a love line it's warm and broad-minded, with plenty of room in the relationship. Its catch shows up later than on most lines. Jupiter partners often bring a big plan with them, a move abroad, a joint venture, a house in the country, and the plan can outgrow the relationship that made it.
Don't pick a town by its exact distance to this line. A birth time one minute later moves every line a quarter of a degree of longitude west, about 28 km at the equator, so a time recorded to the nearest five minutes already leaves the line somewhere in a strip 140 km wide.
Where it runs
The Jupiter DSC line is a curve, not a straight line. It crosses the equator 90° of longitude east of your Jupiter MC line. Away from the equator it swings towards the IC line in the hemisphere Jupiter was on that day (north or south of the celestial equator) and towards the MC line in the other, and it ends where it meets them. Everywhere on it, Jupiter was setting when you were born.
Jupiter's declination, how far north or south of the celestial equator it sits, decides where its rising and setting lines stop: at 90° of latitude minus the declination. For births between 1930 and 2025 it ran from 23.5° S to 23.5° N, so in some charts those lines end as close to the equator as about 67° of latitude, north or south. Beyond that point Jupiter didn't rise or set at all on the day you were born, while the MC and IC lines carry on to the poles.
Distance and birth time
A line is a band, not a wall. Zenith Map's scores count a line in full on it, about 60% at 250 km, about 14% at 500 km and not at all beyond 1,000 km. Astrocartographers draw the edge in different places; the methodology page gives the reasoning for this one.
Every line in a chart moves west by a quarter of a degree of longitude for each minute later the birth: about 28 km at the equator and 14 km at 60° latitude. A time rounded to the nearest quarter hour can put your Jupiter DSC line up to about 200 km from where it's drawn, which is why the map draws bands when you say the time is approximate.
Questions
Is the Jupiter DSC line good for marriage?
Jupiter setting is known for generous, encouraging partners and relationships that widen both people's lives, sometimes across cultures. The caution is about scale: plans and promises bigger than either of you can keep.
Which is better for love, the Jupiter DSC or the Venus DSC line?
For romance in the plain sense, Venus: it's the classic love line, all warmth, attraction and affection. Jupiter DSC brings generosity, shared beliefs and partners who widen your world, and it's the better line for a partner who is also an ally or a mentor.
Is the Jupiter DSC line good for business partnerships?
Traditionally, yes. The Descendant covers contracts and partners of every kind, and Jupiter there is read as goodwill on both sides, generous terms and allies who open doors. Because both sides tend to be optimistic on this line, check that an enthusiastic offer adds up on paper.
What's the catch with the Jupiter DSC line?
Inflation. Partners and allies here tend to promise generously and mean it, and plans made together can outgrow what either of you can deliver. Jupiter square Neptune or opposite Saturn in the natal chart is read as widening the gap between what's offered and what arrives.
