What the Mercury DSC line means
Mercury setting brings people who engage your mind: talkers, traders, teachers, younger collaborators. Relationships here run on exchange and are often formed through work or study. It favours negotiation and partnership agreements. Expect to do a lot of explaining, and be wary of partners whose words outrun their actions.
Mercury setting favours the partner you can still talk to at two in the morning. A romance here tends to live in long dinners and longer message threads, and friendships can be built almost entirely out of argument, the good-natured kind.
The Descendant governs contracts along with partners, and Mercury is the planet of paperwork, so the line gets busy with agreements of every sort: an agency, a co-authorship, a joint venture, a tenancy. Put things in writing here, since people agree readily and remember differently.
Heat is in shorter supply. Mercury is a planet of the head, and a Mercury DSC relationship can be all talk in the plain sense: lively and clever, and short on touch or comfort. If that matters to you, see whether a Venus or Moon line runs within reach, or how your natal Venus is placed, before you count on this line for love.
Where it runs
The Mercury DSC line is a curve, not a straight line. It crosses the equator 90° of longitude east of your Mercury MC line. Away from the equator it swings towards the IC line in the hemisphere Mercury was on that day (north or south of the celestial equator) and towards the MC line in the other, and it ends where it meets them. Everywhere on it, Mercury was setting when you were born.
Mercury's declination, how far north or south of the celestial equator it sits, decides where its rising and setting lines stop: at 90° of latitude minus the declination. For births between 1930 and 2025 it ran from 25.9° S to 25.7° N, so in some charts those lines end as close to the equator as about 64° of latitude, north or south. Beyond that point Mercury didn't rise or set at all on the day you were born, while the MC and IC lines carry on to the poles.
Distance and birth time
A line is a band, not a wall. Zenith Map's scores count a line in full on it, about 60% at 250 km, about 14% at 500 km and not at all beyond 1,000 km. Astrocartographers draw the edge in different places; the methodology page gives the reasoning for this one.
Every line in a chart moves west by a quarter of a degree of longitude for each minute later the birth: about 28 km at the equator and 14 km at 60° latitude. A time rounded to the nearest quarter hour can put your Mercury DSC line up to about 200 km from where it's drawn, which is why the map draws bands when you say the time is approximate.
Questions
Is the Mercury DSC line good for love?
For a relationship built on talk, yes. The line has a name for curious, articulate partners who are good to argue with, often met through work, study or a shared interest. It says less about passion or emotional comfort, which belong to Mars, Venus and the Moon.
Is the Mercury Descendant line good for business partnerships?
Yes, and that's one of its main uses. The Descendant covers partners and contracts, and Mercury is trade and negotiation, so deals tend to come together quickly here. Follow-through is the weak point: people say yes readily, so expect to chase what was agreed.
What kind of people do you meet on your Mercury DSC line?
Talkers, by tradition: writers, teachers, salespeople, students and people younger than you or quicker on their feet. Because Mercury also rules siblings and neighbours, a friend of a brother or the person next door can turn into a partner here as readily as anyone met at work.
