What the Mercury MC line means
Mercury overhead makes communication your public calling card. Mercury on the Midheaven builds a career out of many small exchanges, not one big one. Calls, pitches, columns, lessons, deals, replies. The volume goes up, and the reputation comes from the sum. Journalists, translators, agents, brokers, teachers, editors and anyone paid for knowing who to ask fit it best.
Side projects multiply here. Two jobs and a consultancy are normal on a Mercury MC, and the risk is less failure than overcommitment: twelve open threads and nobody quite sure what you do.
In the tradition Mercury takes its colour from whatever it touches, more than any other planet does, so its aspects in your natal chart set the tone of what you're known for. With Jupiter it talks big and sells well. With Saturn it writes the careful report everyone relies on. With Neptune it's better at stories than at contracts.
Where it runs
The Mercury MC line runs from pole to pole along a single meridian of longitude. Everywhere on it, Mercury was on the meridian at the top of its daily arc when you were born. Your Mercury IC line is the other half of the same circle, 180° of longitude away.
Distance and birth time
A line is a band, not a wall. Zenith Map's scores count a line in full on it, about 60% at 250 km, about 14% at 500 km and not at all beyond 1,000 km. Astrocartographers draw the edge in different places; the methodology page gives the reasoning for this one.
Every line in a chart moves west by a quarter of a degree of longitude for each minute later the birth: about 28 km at the equator and 14 km at 60° latitude. A time rounded to the nearest quarter hour can put your Mercury MC line up to about 200 km from where it's drawn, which is why the map draws bands when you say the time is approximate.

Is the Mercury MC line good for career?
For careers built on words, trade or information, few lines do more. Writing, teaching, sales, media, consulting and translation come first, and the line is linked with being known for what you say and what you know. It's busier than it is deep, so long single projects can get crowded out.
Should a writer live on the Mercury MC line?
For being read, it's the line astrocartographers name first: getting published, picked up, quoted and asked to say more. For the writing itself, the quiet hours at a desk, many prefer the Mercury IC line, which puts Mercury in the private part of the chart.
