Sun DSC line

Significant others. The Sun DSC line (Descendant, often written DC) runs through the places where Sun was setting on the western horizon when you were born.

What the Sun DSC line means

The Sun setting puts the light on the people you meet. Partners, clients and rivals here tend to be strong characters who shape your path; relationships become the main event. It is a good line for finding a partner or a patron, and a demanding one, because you are asked to share the stage you would rather hold alone.

The Descendant is the sunset line, and the light here falls on whoever sits across from you. In the classic reading the people you meet carry the qualities of your Sun for you: the confident partner, the ally whose name opens doors, the mentor who says out loud what you were half thinking.

It's a strong line for anything done in pairs. An agent and a client, two co-founders, a backer and a project, a marriage. A single meeting with the right person suits it better than working a crowd, so a Sun DSC city is a good place to go and pitch to someone in particular.

Rivals belong here too. The old texts give the Descendant to open enemies as well as to partners, and a Sun DSC line can produce a competitor worth having, someone whose standard makes you raise your own.

Where you do meet a strong partner, expect to be known as theirs for a while. Introductions start with their name, and the social world you live in tends to be theirs before it's yours.

Where it runs

The Sun DSC line is a curve, not a straight line. It crosses the equator 90° of longitude east of your Sun MC line. Away from the equator it swings towards the IC line in the hemisphere Sun was on that day (north or south of the celestial equator) and towards the MC line in the other, and it ends where it meets them. Everywhere on it, Sun was setting when you were born.

Sun's declination, how far north or south of the celestial equator it sits, decides where its rising and setting lines stop: at 90° of latitude minus the declination. For births between 1930 and 2025 it ran from 23.5° S to 23.5° N, so in some charts those lines end as close to the equator as the Arctic and Antarctic Circles, for a birthday near a solstice. Beyond that point Sun didn't rise or set at all on the day you were born, while the MC and IC lines carry on to the poles.

Distance and birth time

A line is a band, not a wall. Zenith Map's scores count a line in full on it, about 60% at 250 km, about 14% at 500 km and not at all beyond 1,000 km. Astrocartographers draw the edge in different places; the methodology page gives the reasoning for this one.

Every line in a chart moves west by a quarter of a degree of longitude for each minute later the birth: about 28 km at the equator and 14 km at 60° latitude. A time rounded to the nearest quarter hour can put your Sun DSC line up to about 200 km from where it's drawn, which is why the map draws bands when you say the time is approximate.

Questions

Is the Sun DSC line good for marriage?

It's associated with meeting a significant partner, often someone with a forceful personality, standing in the world or a clear sense of direction. Whether that becomes a marriage depends on the two of you, and on Venus and the Moon in your natal chart, which say more about love and comfort than the Sun does.

Is the Sun DSC line better than the Venus DSC line for love?

For most people it is the more demanding of the two. The Venus DSC is where most people look for love first, with warm, easy and affectionate relationships. The Sun DSC brings strong characters as partners, people who tend to change the direction of your life. Venus is the softer choice; the Sun is the more consequential one.

What does the Sun Descendant line mean for business?

Business partnerships come under the Descendant as much as marriages do, and on the Sun DSC line they carry weight: a co-founder, a patron, a major client, a collaborator better known than you. Expect the other party to have firm views on how things are run.
