Saturn IC line

Roots and burdens. The Saturn IC line (Imum Coeli) runs through the places where Saturn was at the bottom of its daily arc when you were born.

What the Saturn IC line means

With Saturn beneath you, home comes with structure and weight: old houses, family duty, long commitments, sometimes loneliness. It can anchor a scattered life and suits those who want to build slowly and stay. It can also feel heavy and cold. Choose it with eyes open, and give yourself warmth deliberately.

Saturn under your feet tends to keep you in place. The textbook pattern is buying rather than renting, staying longer than planned and ending up responsible for something: a roof that needs replacing, a parent who wants family nearby, a family firm, a field. The weight sits at the base of the relocated chart, so you feel it in the hours at home more than out in the world.

For a life that has been all movement, that can be exactly right. Someone who has moved every two years since university, or never had a settled home as a child, may find that roots finally take on this line.

Look at your natal Moon first. The Moon shares the home with the IC in traditional astrology, and a Moon in hard aspect to Saturn at birth is read as making this line feel colder than it would for someone else.

Visit in the dark months before you commit. Saturn is cold and dry in the old symbolism, and whatever is heavy about a place shows in midwinter more than in midsummer.

Where it runs

The Saturn IC line runs from pole to pole too, half a world away from the Saturn MC line. Everywhere on it, Saturn was on the meridian at the bottom of its daily arc when you were born.

Distance and birth time

A line is a band, not a wall. Zenith Map's scores count a line in full on it, about 60% at 250 km, about 14% at 500 km and not at all beyond 1,000 km. Astrocartographers draw the edge in different places; the methodology page gives the reasoning for this one.

Every line in a chart moves west by a quarter of a degree of longitude for each minute later the birth: about 28 km at the equator and 14 km at 60° latitude. A time rounded to the nearest quarter hour can put your Saturn IC line up to about 200 km from where it's drawn, which is why the map draws bands when you say the time is approximate.

Questions

Is it bad to live on a Saturn IC line?

It depends what you want from home. Read traditionally, it's heavy: duties, slow roots and sometimes a lonely stretch. People who want to settle, build and stay often welcome that weight, since this is a line where what you build is said to last. Someone who wants home to be light and easy will feel the weight more.

What does the Saturn IC line mean for family?

The IC is the angle of roots, parents and lineage, and Saturn there points to duty to family, inherited responsibilities and a strong pull from the past. Some people go to a Saturn IC line to see to family affairs, or to live where their family came from.
