Uranus in astrocartography

Uranus is the planet of the break: freedom, invention, sudden change, the urge to do things differently from everyone you grew up with. It takes 84 years to go round the zodiac and spends about seven in each sign, so your Uranus sign mostly tells you which generation you belong to. What's personal is where its lines fall, and that comes down to the birth time. Uranus hardly moves in a day; the Earth does the moving, and every minute later you were born puts each line a quarter of a degree of longitude further west, about 28 km at the equator.

The four lines send that restlessness into different corners of life. The MC line works on your career and public standing, which tends to swerve; the IC on home and family, which won't stay put; the Ascendant on you, your manner and the way you carry yourself; the Descendant on the people who come into your life, often without warning. People pick a Uranus line deliberately when they're stuck: after a decade in the same job, a relationship that ran on habit, a town that only knows them as one thing. Look at Uranus in the natal chart before you go, because a Uranus square your Sun or Moon makes for louder lines than one that touches nothing personal.

Uranus MC line: breaking the mould

Uranus overhead makes your public life unpredictable and original. Careers change direction suddenly, unconventional work is rewarded, and you are known as the one who does it differently: technology, science, reform, independent ventures.

With Uranus beneath you, domestic life refuses routine. Frequent moves, unusual households, sudden changes of base and a strong need for freedom at home.

Uranus ASC line: freedom and surprise

Uranus rising makes you more independent, inventive and electric, and others find you intriguing or hard to pin down. Good for reinvention, for shaking off old roles, for meeting people unlike you.

Uranus DSC line: unconventional others

Uranus setting draws unusual partners and relationships that begin and end suddenly. The people you meet here free you from old patterns and rarely offer permanence, and the attraction is often to someone unlike anyone you have chosen before.

Where the lines run

Uranus's declination, how far north or south of the celestial equator it sits, decides where its rising and setting lines stop: at 90° of latitude minus the declination. For births between 1930 and 2025 it ran from 23.7° S to 23.7° N, so in some charts those lines end as close to the equator as about 66° of latitude, north or south. Beyond that point Uranus didn't rise or set at all on the day you were born, while the MC and IC lines carry on to the poles.
